Yellow Ribbon Marks its 5th Anniversary

Join us in congratulating and supporting the ongoing efforts of the Yellow Ribbon Support Group as they mark their 5th anniversary and 10,196 care packages sent to date. The mission of the group is to support the men and women of the United States active military forces deployed to foreign shores through prayers, letters and "wish list" packages on behalf of all Americans.
ROWT and our women's club have supported Yellow Ribbon over the years with generous donations of items for these care packages. Thanks to all who have contributed. We will continue to support our Freedom Fighters through the Yellow Ribbon Support Group.

Republicans Unite

Republican women and guests showed their commitment to the party and to reform in county government by attending the first membership luncheon hosted by the Republican Women of Wheeling Township. Featured speaker Tony Peraica, our GOP nominee for State's Attorney made the case for new Republican leadership and the difference he will make in fighting corruption, nepotism and election fraud throughout county government. This Week at the White House: President Bush Welcomes Pope Benedict XVI

President and Mrs. Bush welcomed His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to the White House with an arrival ceremony on April 16, 2008, during his first visit to the United States as Pope. The President and the Holy Father will continue discussions, which they began during the President's visit to the Vatican in June 2007, on their common commitment to the importance of faith and reason in reaching shared goals. These goals include advancing peace throughout the Middle East and other troubled regions, promoting inter-faith understanding, and strengthening human rights and freedom, especially religious liberty, around the world.

About Tony Peraica

Our speaker is the 2008 Republican nominee for State's Attorney in Cook County.
A Croatian-American, orphaned at age 13, Tony likes to say "he's living the American dream". His BA in political science from the U of I in Chicago led to a JD from John Marshall Law School and a successful career as an attorney.
A county commissioner from his west suburban district, he is a leader in a coalition of board members who regularly fight corruption and wasteful spending in county government. Tony is best known for his spirited and near-winning 2006 challenge to Todd Stroger for county board president.
He's active in his community and in the GOP and an outstanding spokesperson for real change in Cook County.

"Laura Night" a Success

2008 will be an exciting year for our club with many opportunities for Republican women of the township to upbuild the party. (Three of our members are running for delegate or alternate to the Republican National Convention, and one is running for State Representative!) Dues are just $10 (payable to RWWT, 909 E. Our theme for this meeting was “Laura Night,” and we hosted two candidates named Laura! Laura Bartell, candidate for 66th district State Representative, and Laura Morask, candidate for 12th Subcircuit Judge, both shared stories related to their Republican commitment and how they will bring Republican principles into the offices for which they are running.

Continuing the “Laura Night” theme, we had some fun with a Laura Bush trivia quiz and learned some interesting facts about our First Lady. (We will soon be posting the quiz here for you to test your own knowledge.) Members who attended Laura Night signed a Christmas card to the First Lady.

Speaking of Christmas, stay tuned to the White House website (www.whitehouse.gov) as the President and First Lady capture the wonder of the holiday season. In the past a theme is usually announced, along with a video tour of the White House. The holiday menu is also revealed just in case you need some ideas!

Tonite is "Laura" Night - November Meeting

Join us for our annual election of club officers. In addition to saluting our First Lady, Laura Bush, our guests will be Laura Bartell, candidate for State Representative in the 66th District (in the southern part of our township), and Laura Morask, candidate for 12th Subcircuit Judge (in all but the western edge of our township).
Remember that the Republican Women of the Tenth Congressional District are undertaking a drive for personal care items and treats for our heroes in Afghanistan and Iraq. Please bring your gifts!

Springfield Trip Part II

 

We were pleased to have an honored guest join us on our bus trip to Springfield --the wife of our US Senate candidate (challenging Dick Durbin)--Nancy Sauerberg (Mrs. Steve) of Willowbrook. She told us we were helping her fulfill a longtime dream of visiting the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, and here she is with Abe himself! (The museum displays wonderful lifelike figures of the Lincoln family and other key characters of the day, e.g. John Wilkes Booth, Frederick Douglas, in various places, especially in the lobby, arranged in front of a replica of the White House portico. So much to inspire us, and it's in our state!)

Republican Women Go To Springfield

On Columbus Day women from Wheeling Township and Maine Township went on a bus trip to Springfield to tour the Abraham Lincoln Museum and Library. We stopped along the way for a brief tour of Lincoln's tomb. There was a special exhibit at the museum where we learned more about the First Lady, Mary Todd Lincoln and her life. A unique paper dress exhibit in her honor was featured in the library building.

Sunday Brunch

I attended this Red, White and Blue event co-hosted by the Republican Women of Park Ridge and our own Republican Women of Wheeling Township. Many “party faithfuls” were present. The keynote speaker was Andy McKenna, Chairman of the Illinois Republican Party. Chairman McKenna told us there was reason for hope in the Republican Party in Illinois if we know who we are, if we have a plan which includes a realistic view of where we are and if we work toward success. One sobering reality is that our state is headed for bankruptcy!
However all is not lost. Recent surveys conducted by the state GOP indicate that even in the blue state of Illinois with all its woes, 45% would vote Republican. This is promising and something that we can build on.
The states finances, spending, education, ethics and corruption are major concerns of Illinois citizens. Low taxes, quality education and a responsible government are just a few ingredients in a strong Republican message. We can communicate this to the voters.
Penny Pullen, president of our club and of Eagle Forum of Illinois, surprised Chairman McKenna with a distinguished Eagle award for his personal, successful intervention to stop this summer’s planned Democrat tax hikes in Springfield.

2007 Freedom Festival

This year's family freedom festival provided many opportunities for our community to honor, support and thank the troops. The event which is sponsored by We Do Care, was held at the Barrington train station. The day's schedule included guest speakers, military service groups in the active duty Care Village, representatives from various branches of the military, banner signing, a Freedom walk (taped by Pentagon TV), food and plenty of great entertainment. It was a very successful day.

Republican Day at the Illinois State Fair

 

Rachel Sharp and Sylvia Hoff were among the ladies who joined the group of Republicans of Wheeling Township on a road trip to Springfield on Thursday. We arrived at the soggy fairgrounds and joined many fellow republicans whose spirits were not dampened by the morning rainfall. We were personally greeted at the gate by representatives of the various campaigns, including Craig Romney, Mitt's younger son. The crowds gathered in the tents were obviously excited about their candidates. A picnic lunch was served-BBQ pork sandwiches, hot dogs, potato salad and beans. The crowd gathered in the tents were obviously excited and were donned in T-Shirts bearing their candidates name.
After casting our votes in the presidential straw poll, we wandered the grounds taking in the sights, smells and sampled along the way. Later in the afternoon we received the final results of the straw poll as follows:
